Family Travel Guide - Arizona

For us, by us! Alex Stratikis - Divergent Adventures Global Ambassador, Writer, Editor & Content Creator.

I am a passionate advocate for neurodivergent travelers and the founder of Autism Adventures Abroad, a platform dedicated to making travel more accessible for autistic individuals. As an autistic travel writer, tourism consultant, and content creator, I draw from my own journey of self-discovery to highlight the challenges and triumphs of being an autistic solo traveler. Through my work, I aim to encourage other autistic individuals to explore the world confidently while partnering with the travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors to make the industry more inclusive and understand neurodivergent needs.

I was diagnosed with autism at the age of six and spent much of my early life navigating the world with a unique perspective, always searching for ways to connect more deeply with others and understand myself. It wasn't until later in life that I discovered how travel could be a powerful tool for personal growth and self-awareness. After spending time in Tokyo and pursuing a degree in Japanese, my initial dream was to work as a Japanese-English translator. However, when COVID-19 upended those plans, my career was uncertain. However, I found a new path that merged my love for travel with my desire to help others.

The idea for Autism Adventures Abroad was born during a reflective period I spent at home during the pandemic lockdowns. There, I realized how my travel experiences had allowed me to understand better my autism and how it intersects with the world around me. My travels had become a source of empowerment, allowing me to explore new cultures, broaden my perspectives, and come to terms with my identity as an autistic individual. This realization led me to create a platform to share my personal experiences, insights, and advice with fellow autistic travelers while offering consultancy and support to travel and tourism businesses looking to improve their accessibility offerings.

Through Autism Adventures Abroad and Divergent Adventures, I work to break down the barriers faced by autistic travelers, helping businesses and organizations understand how to create truly inclusive and supportive environments. I provide consultancy, workshops, educational programs, guest appearances at events, and blog writing, all aimed at fostering a more inclusive tourism industry. I also share my experiences through interviews, podcasts, and articles in travel and disability magazines, reaching a broader audience to inspire change in the world of travel.

For me, travel is not just about exploring the world—it's about understanding myself and the world around me in a deeper way. It's a transformative tool that has allowed me to grow and embrace my neurodivergence. By sharing this story and collaborating with Divergent Adventures, I hope to encourage more autistic individuals to embrace travel as a means of self-discovery and create spaces where everyone, regardless of their neurodivergence, can confidently explore the world.
