Self-led, Self-drive Divergent Adventures

Family Travel Guide - Arizona

9. & 10. Understanding The Arizona Climate & Environment – The core of Divergent Adventures Itineraries features outdoor activities in natural settings.

What You Need to Know:

Arizona’s desert environment is unlike anywhere else in the U.S., and it can have a unique impact on your family—especially autistic children. Most visitors come from places with higher humidity and milder temperatures, making Arizona’s extreme dryness and heat feel even more intense.

With over 315 days of sunshine per year, cloudless skies, and frequent temperatures above 100°F, dehydration happens faster than you think—especially when you're active (walking, hiking, or exploring). Even in higher elevations, like the Superstition Mountains or Ponderosa Pine forests, the combination of dry air and physical activity accelerates fluid loss. By the time you feel thirsty, dehydration is already setting in. It can take a full day to recover, so staying ahead of hydration is key to an enjoyable trip.

How to Prepare:

  • Pack Smart: Bring sunscreen, light breathable clothing, hats, and plenty of water. Your Divergent Adventures itinerary includes a packing list tailored for the whole family.

  • Hydrate in Advance: Before your trip, test and choose an electrolyte powder in a flavor your child likes. Pack plenty and start drinking extra fluids before you even arrive.

  • Drink More Than Usual: You’ll need more water and electrolytes than you do at home. Even mild dehydration can cause irritability, anxiety, and discomfort, particularly for neurodivergent travelers.

Why It Matters:

Keeping your child comfortable physically reduces stress, irritability, and sensory overload—helping them (and you) enjoy the adventure without sunburn, fatigue, or dehydration getting in the way.

Pro Tip: Electrolytes increase urination for everyone—a good sign your body is processing fluids properly. That means knowing where the nearest restroom is is just as important as staying hydrated. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered!

With some preparation, you can embrace Arizona’s beauty while keeping your family happy, healthy, and ready for adventure.
