Empowering Families Through Self-Led Adventure Travel

Who We Are - Our Approach - What We Do

Divergent Adventures is a unique travel company designed to empower families traveling with autistic children aged 7-13 and 13-18. We recognize the challenges and anxieties often associated with travel for families with autistic members and offer a solution: self-led adventure travel experiences tailored to everyone’s unique set of needs. Our approach fosters connection, exploration, and personal growth through immersive nature-based activities.

Many families with autistic children desire to travel and explore the world but face significant barriers. These include sensory sensitivities, difficulty with unexpected changes, and a lack of autism-friendly accommodations and activities. Traditional travel options often fall short, leaving these families excluded, which leaves many choosing not to travel at all. Many cities provide destination information through Tourism Boards, Destination Marketing and Management organizations, but few, if any, offer curated itineraries for autistic travelers and their families to help manage and navigate travel within them.

Divergent Adventures offers a comprehensive platform that empowers families to participate in a unique travel adventure curated just for them. We partner with tourism boards, destination management organizations, and their clients (participating businesses, many of which are certified Autism Centers via IBCCES) to secure special access and accommodations tailored to the needs of autistic individuals. Further, we provide detailed, curated itineraries that help guests manage and navigate their vacation to maximize the experience for all family members.

What We Do:

  • Curated Self-Drive Itineraries: We provide detailed itineraries featuring nature-based activities like hiking and exploring remote destinations, accessible primarily through walking, hiking, and other third-party supplied activity-based transportation such as boating or offroad vehicles. These itineraries are designed for self-led, self-drive travel, allowing families to travel at their own pace and maintain control over their environment.

  • Alternative Options: Recognizing the need for flexibility, our itineraries include alternative activities and destinations to accommodate potential changes in plans due to sensory overload, unexpected closures, or other unforeseen circumstances.

  • Integrated Technology: We leverage readily available mobile apps like AllTrails, Geocaching, and Google Maps to enhance the travel experience and provide families with valuable tools for navigation, exploration, and engagement with their surroundings.

  • Pre-Trip Education and Resources: We provide comprehensive pre-trip information and resources to prepare families for their adventures, addressing topics such as navigating destinations, sensory considerations, and communication strategies.

  • Community and Support: We offer a free newsletter, AI support, and site membership to foster a sense of community and provide ongoing support and resources to families.
